Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs)
SVQs are available to people age 16 and over. They are based on standards of competence that describe a candidate's ability to work in real conditions.
There are five levels of SVQ:
• Level 1 - basic, routine and repetitive skills
• Level 2 - broad range of skills including non-routine activities and individual responsibility
• Level 3 - supervisory skills
• Level 4 - management skills
• Level 5 - senior management skills.
Modern Apprenticeships (MAs)
MAs are open to anyone over the age of 16 who live in Scotland and wish to work towards industry recognised accreditations. The work-based qualification offers individuals the opportunity to train as a craftsperson or for a technical or managerial role whilst in paid employment. Some Modern Apprenticeships require attendance at College on a day or block release basis.
A MA consists of an appropriate SVQ at either Level 2 or Level 3. In addition, Core Skills units of Communication, Working with Others, Numeracy, Information Technology and Problem Solving must be gained.
To encourage employees' development and broaden training, some Modern Apprenticeships also contain additional components that vary from industry to industry. They may include additional units from other SVQs, industry-specific qualifications, or academic qualifications such as Higher National Certificates and Diplomas.
For further information on these programmes contact the Service Leader Vocational Learning on 01563 523501 ext 4112 or email trainingsolutions@kilmarnock.ac.uk.
