Fabrication and Welding Engineering - MA and SVQ Level 3

This qualification contains a set of three mandatory units, structured within seven defined pathways Manual Welding; Structural Steel Work; Sheet Metal Working (3mm or less); Plateworking (3mm upwards); Welding Machine Setting and Operating; Composite Fabrication; Pipe and Tube Fabrication. From this, a choice of 57 specific units can be chosen from options such as:

• Welding Materials by the Manual Metal Arc Process
• Preparing Resistance Spot, Seam and Projection Welding Machines
• Heat Treating Materials for Fabrication Activities
• Marking out Components for Metalwork.

The candidate and employer will discuss and agree with the assessor the pathway and units which reflect the candidate's job role. The candidate is required to produce a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills in the job. At Level 3 the candidate will be expected to be technically advanced and produce sufficient evidence to demonstrate their knowledge and practical skills at this level. The candidate will receive help and support on how to develop this from the assessor during regular visits outlined in the candidate's training plan.

Entry Requirements
In order to achieve this qualification, the candidate must be employed in a fabrication and welding engineering environment, have their employer's support to do it, have already gained the practical skills and knowledge or be receiving training on the job. At Level 3 the candidate must demonstrate good practical skills and knowledge of the job, have a degree of responsibility, and demonstrate all work carried out is within the safe working practices of the workshop, and show ability in maintaining production standards.

This qualification can help to improve career development/promotion within the candidate's existing workplace. Through completion of an SVQ Level 3 or MA, candidates can progress through an academic route of HNC, HND to Degree Level qualifications.
