Kennametal, one of the world’s leading metalworking and tool production companies, hosted a presentation to future engineers at Kilmarnock College on Thursday 5 November. Working with the grass roots of universities and colleges throughout the world, Kennametal, visited the College to conduct their first ever presentation in Scotland to SVQ Level 2 Engineering students.
The presentation, given by Collas Pilmer, Kennametal’s Applications Engineer in Scotland, covered numerous areas of engineering including machinery, tooling, basic engineering and wages. Aimed at bridging the gap between students and companies and raising awareness of what to expect within the workplace, students were given the opportunity to ask questions and talk with company executives after the event.
Kenny MacFarlane, Area Distributor Manager for Kennametal stated: “We want to encourage people to get into Engineering as we believe it creates a varied and extensive career. Manufacturing does not mean greasy tools, but is now extremely high tech. We are trying to build awareness of what to expect in the engineering world and bridging the gap between companies and students, something that Kilmarnock College embraces with their apprenticeship schemes.”
Specialising in advanced engineering and in the creation of products for high-tech or complex industries, Kennametal employ over 10,000 people and have their company headquarters in Latrobe, Pennsylvania and European headquarters in Switzerland.
Dave Watson, Engineering Curriculum Manager at Kilmarnock College stated: “It is great to have such a well respected, industry leader come to Kilmarnock College and share their knowledge on the sector.
Within the engineering department we aim to provide both the practical and theoretical skills necessary to prepare our students for the workplace. Through events like this students have the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, hear about developments within the sector and talk with potential future employers.”
