Olympic winner visits Kilmarnock College sports students

Rhona Martin, Skip of the Olympic gold medal winning Ladies Curling Team, will be visiting Kilmarnock College’s Centre of Sporting Excellence on Wednesday 18 November. Rhona Martin will discuss the importance of commitment and motivation in sport with students at the College.

Rhona will present to Sport and Fitness students on her experience of top level sport, including what it was like to be involved in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Rhona, originally from Ayr, has won a range of medals and titles including silver at the 1998 European championships and Scottish Ladies Champion in 2000. Currently working as a curling instructor, Rhona is helping to pave the way for future hopefuls.

Sandy King, Curriculum Manager for Sport and Fitness states; "Sport can make significant positive impacts in terms of health, community, and social and educational learning and its popularity in Scotland is ever growing. This popularity has been further increased by our Olympic successes and Scotland’s direct involvement in Glasgow 2014 and London 2012. More than ever British talent is shining through and we strive to develop that talent at Kilmarnock College.

“We are delighted to welcome Ms Martin who exemplifies the rewards that can be achieved through dedication, commitment and love for sport. Many Sports and Fitness students at Kilmarnock College are high level performers in their own right and will benefit from the insight of Rhona, who understands the demands of world class training and competition.”

Currently a number of Kilmarnock students compete in areas including international volleyball, martial arts and swimming. Kilmarnock students are also showing national talent at netball, in which one student is presently training on Scotland’s Under 19’s, Under 21’s and Great Britain’s development team.

Kilmarnock College’s Centre of Sporting Excellence, boasts state of the art facilities and offers courses from introductory level to advanced professional qualifications.
