Press Release - Students Cut for Cash

Hairdressing students at Kilmarnock College recently organised and took part in an evening billed as the ‘Hair Oscars’, held at the Park Hotel in Kilmarnock, with all proceeds going to Breast Cancer UK.

Students Cut for Cash

The competition took place on Monday 30 November and showcased stylish hair designs created by Kilmarnock College students. Trainee hairdressers, who attend the College on a day release basis, work-based students, who attend the College one afternoon per week, and full-time hairdressing students from the College, had the option to style their models from either a ‘red carpet’ or a ‘street wise’ theme. International hairdresser, Taylor Ferguson, judged the styles as they were presented via a catwalk show.

Over 50 guests attended the ‘Hair Oscars’ event, which was compared by local celebrity ‘Ivana’, alongside representatives from permanent hair colour specialist OsmoIkon, who presented their new collection in hair colour, and local barber K&M, who offered cutting demonstrations throughout the evening. The event was sponsored by OsmoIkon and Grays International. Funds from ticket sales and competition entry costs have been donated to Breast Cancer UK.

Awards were given to the top five styles from both the ‘red carpet’ and ‘street wise’ categories resulting in a total of ten students receiving awards on the evening.

Hairdressing Curriculum Manager at Kilmarnock College, Nancy Dobbie, said: “It was wonderful to see so many students receiving awards on the evening. The styles prepared by our students were fantastic and extremely well finished. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for coming along on the evening, each of the employers who were involved, the sponsors, the Park Hotel and, of course, the students for taking part. This was the first time we have run the ‘Hair Oscars’ and the evening was a huge success.”

Principal of Kilmarnock College, Heather Dunk, added: “Congratulations to Nancy Dobbie and staff from the hairdressing department who made this show possible by all of their hard work.  Special thanks to our students who were ambassadors for the College demonstrating their talents on the evening and finally, thanks to all of the hair models, the show would not have been possible without them.”
