Students part of winning team

Four Kilmarnock College students, studying work-based SVQ qualifications, were among the winning team from the Redford Nursing Home in Ayr who recently picked up a prestigious Scottish Care Award.

The team scooped first place in the Single Care Home Category at the annual ceremony, held recently at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow. The Single Care Home Category recognises nursing homes which cater for short, long and residential stays. The awards were judged by a number of professionals from the fields of health and social care, including Professor June Andrews from the Dementia Centre of Stirling University and Carole Wilkinson, recently retired Chief Executive of the Scottish Social Services Council.

The four students, employed with Redford Nursing Home, are currently studying SVQ Level 2 Health and Social Care qualifications through Kilmarnock College. The SVQ Health and Social Care work-based qualifications are certificated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and can be studied over one year with regular workplace visits from Kilmarnock College Vocational Assessors.

Health and Social Care Vocational Assessor, Gillian Cameron, has been delivering SVQ Health and Social Care qualifications to staff from the Redford Nursing Home since 2003, supporting candidates through both Level 2 and Level 3. Gillian said: “We are delighted to be associated with the development of Redford’s workforce and extend our congratulations to the whole team, in particular, Redford Nursing Home owner, Eric Armour and Manager, Margaret Watson. Over the years we have established a great relationship with Redford Home, resulting in a high number of employees achieving work-based qualifications through Kilmarnock College.”

Redford Nursing Home owner, Eric Armour, added: “We are thrilled to have picked up this recent award and we are pleased that the dedication of our staff has been recognised on a national level. At Redford we offer a quality service with trained staff on hand 24 hours a day. We are very pleased to be working with Kilmarnock College and look forward to building on this relationship going forward.”
