Scottish Coal and ATH Resources representatives visited Kilmarnock College last month for a meeting to discuss their continued partnership. Kilmarnock College works with the organisations to provide training for students who are interested in working in the mining industry.

The course, which is in its successful third year at the College, is specially designed to prepare and train young people for a career in open cast mining. Scottish Coal and ATH Resources have employed students direct from Kilmarnock College’s course, with five students being recruited into full time employment by Scottish Coal as plant mechanics following their graduation last year and a further three going to ATH.

Keith Jones, HR Director, Scottish Resources Group said; “The Open Cast Mining Transport and Equipment Maintenance course at Kilmarnock College is vital in ensuring a competent and able future workforce in this sector. We have been very impressed with the ability of students who have graduated and work closely with the College to create a course that meets our training requirements.”

Supported by Scottish Coal and ATH Resources, the course gives basic training in General Craft Practices, Drive Line Technologies, Vehicle Pneumatics and Hydraulics, Braking and Steering Systems, Welding, Material and Technology and studies in Electrical and Electronic Systems. Students also have the opportunity for a work experience placement and experience a combination of theory and practical hands on experience.
