Care Students Take Part in Motivation Day
Care students from Kilmarnock College studying programmes including Steps to Care, NC Social Care, and Pre-Nursing, recently had the opportunity to find out how to enhance their career prospects and improve their learning experiences, after taking part in a one day ‘motivation’ event.
The motivation day took place within Kilmarnock College and welcomed guest speakers, including health, social care and university staff, as well as students studying care programmes at degree level. Like the care students taking part in the motivation day, many of the guest speakers also started off their careers on introductory level care courses at Kilmarnock College.
Kilmarnock students listened to each of the speakers, as they discussed options available to them after study, and took part in a question and answer session. The students attending the motivation day also had the opportunity to take part in a number of fun team building activities including a quiz, treasure hunt, keep fit, and challenges on the Nintendo Wii.
The motivation event, now in its third year, has previously been accredited by the HMIe as Sector Leading Innovative Practice (SLIP). Kilmarnock College Health and Social Care Curriculum Manager, Minnie Ker, said: “For the past three years, our motivation events have proved to be extremely successful for students studying access level care programmes. This in turn, has assisted in improving our student retention and achievement rates. The objectives of the motivational events are to give students the opportunity to speak to former students who have gone on to have successful careers in the care industry. This helps increase the students own motivation and commitment to learning.
“This is our second motivation day this academic session, the first of which was held on 7 December for all of our HNC students. The events are a great opportunity for us to raise awareness of team working. In the care sector, teamwork is crucial.
“We are delighted with the success of the recent motivation day and would like to thank our guest speakers for taking the time out of their busy schedules, to speak to our students about their chosen career paths.”
