Kilmarnock College receives extremely positive HMIe report
Kilmarnock College has received a very positive report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIe). Following the external HMIe review, which took place in November, Kilmarnock College has received exceptional feedback, with four confidence statements.
HMIe promotes improvements in standards, quality and attainment in Scottish education through first-hand, independent evaluation.
The confidence statements, which relate to the key principles of high quality learning, learner engagement, learner progress and leadership within the College, are a huge boost and a significant improvement on the College’s 2008 results.
It was identified within the report that Principal Heather Dunk, who took up position in October 2008, has worked with all staff in the College to develop a culture of enablement, challenge and accountability and how her motivational and pragmatic leadership is appreciated by staff. HMIe highlighted how an organisational review, implemented by senior management, and resulting new structure has “successfully and enthusiastically rejuvenated the College’s strategic vision and mission”.
Principal Heather Dunk said: “We are delighted with the outcomes of the HMIe review which reflect our commitment to our learners, employers and the wider community. We will use the findings in the report to build on our strengths and take actions in areas where we can improve the quality of learning and teaching and services for learners.
The College has undergone transformational change and the outcome of the review demonstrates the hard work and dedication of all staff and the engagement of learners in enhancing their own learning and the work and life of the College. The report further emphasises the positive approach staff have adopted to embrace this change and notes that “all teams are highly motivated and committed to providing support to learners”.”
Kilmarnock College’s constructive response to the needs of the local community, employers and partners is highlighted within the review, together with its commitment to social inclusion through the provision of a range of learning opportunities for harder to reach groups of learners. It was also recognised that the College ensured learners were effectively prepared for employment or progression onto other education programmes. Staff within the College were also praised for their “positive and productive” relationships with learners.
