Students Sweep the Boards

Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students from Kilmarnock College have returned home victorious after picking up seven prizes at a prestigious annual hair and beauty competition.

Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students from colleges across Scotland took part in the Scottish finals of the ‘Association of Hairdressers and Therapists’ competition on Tuesday 16 February, eager to showcase their styling talents.

32 students from Kilmarnock College were entered in a range of hair and beauty categories. Kilmarnock College student, Billie Wallace, (17), from Cumnock, won the overall award for the highest marks in the competition. Billie, an Introduction to Hairdressing student, received the prestigious Hugh Kenny Trophy after winning gold in ‘Ladies Progressive Styling’ category and silver in the ‘Blow Dry’ category.

Billie said: “I loved taking part in the competition, it was a great experience and I learned so much. Hairdressing is something that I have always wanted to do and I am really enjoying my time at college. I was pleased to win the overall award and hope to take part in the competition again next year.”

Hairdressing students from Kilmarnock College scooped a total of six awards on the day. Andrew Brown won the Level 3 Skills Challenge category, with Carrie McKendrick taking bronze in the Ladies Evening category. Natalie Ramsay also received a bronze medal in the Ladies Cut & Blow Dry category, and Debbie Ferguson took fourth place in the Ladies Progressive category.

SVQ Level 3 Nail Services student, Laura McPherson (23), also picked up a gold medal for the second consecutive year in the Nail Art Competition.

Laura, from Dreghorn, said: “I love nail art and this year I chose to do Valentine themed nails. I used black, silver and red polish, topped off with glitter and little pink love-hearts. I was really nervous so it was a real shock when I found out I had won! These types of national competitions are a great experience, and I am so grateful to the college for giving me the opportunity to take part.”

Billie, Laura and the other Kilmarnock College winners will now compete in the national finals of the competition, to be held in Blackpool on March 21 and 22.

Nancy Dobbie, Hairdressing Curriculum Manager at Kilmarnock College, said: “We were very impressed with our students’ efforts. The standard of work in this competition is extremely high and we were delighted to once again see our students coming home with awards. We are also thrilled to have one of our students receive the overall Hugh Kenny award; this is a fantastic achievement and a first for the college. We wish everyone the best of luck for the British finals next month.”
