Students promote Relationships, Respect and Right Decisions in the education sector

Students hosted an event at Scotland’s Colleges in response to the government strategy document More Choices, More Chances.

3Rs Event at Scotland s Colleges 26 March 2010

The event, which took place on Friday 26 March, addressed the ‘3 Rs’, Relationships, Respect and Right Decisions, from the student perspective. Students discussed the ways in which educators, and key figures within the education sector, create the cultures and conditions and how they can develop positive relationships with learners through mutual respect and help young people to take responsibility for their future.

The audience of over 100 people included college principals, teaching and support staff, parents and students, allowing a unique opportunity to hear directly from the student viewpoint.

The aim of the government’s More Choice More Chances strategy is to reduce the number of young people who are not engaged in education, employment or training and to offer support to young people to take up education or training when leaving school.

Principal of Kilmarnock College, Heather Dunk, said: “It is great to see students actively involved in promoting their education and the future education of young people in Scotland. It is important we within the education sector are informed of students’ perspectives and it was encouraging to see such a large attendance. This event provided the perfect platform for collaborative discussion in three areas that are fundamentally important in ensuring the best results from our learners.”

Kilmarnock students planned, organised and facilitated the event in partnership with Scotland’s Colleges and students from Coatbridge College.

Linda McTavish, Convenor of Scotland’s Colleges Principal’s Convention said: “We are delighted to see college students from Kilmarnock College and Coatbridge College taking a proactive role in their education. Scotland’s Colleges are dedicated to providing first class learning environments and opportunities for young people, and we are always keen to have students put forward their views and perspective.”
