Student Selected for National Squad
A Kilmarnock College student has been selected to represent Great Britain in the forthcoming European Deaf Football Championships.
HNC Sports Coaching student, Jordan Kerr was one of only 18 men selected for the British Deaf Football squad after demonstrating exceptional football skills at a recent training day in Leeds. The training day, which was held at the David Young Community Academy in Leeds, was to select a team for the first qualifying game against Israel later this month.
Jordan Kerr (24), from Castlemilk, came to Kilmarnock College two years ago with dreams of studying sports coaching, however as he is deaf and has no oral communication ability, he wondered if this would be possible. Thanks to his own hard work, the commitment of sports coaching staff and classmates, as well as the assistance of a college Communication Support Worker (CSW), Jordan’s dreams became a reality.
Heather Dunk, Principal of Kilmarnock College, said: “Jordan has settled into college life very well and lecturing staff, as well as classmates, have helped him adjust to full-time study by learning basic sign language. We are committed to making our courses as accessible as possible and to breaking down any perceived barriers to further education.
“Jordan is a dedicated student and excels at football. We are delighted he has been chosen for the British squad and wish him the best of luck for the qualifying games against Israel.”
Jordan and the rest of his team will travel to Tel Aviv on April 24 for the away qualifying leg of the championships and will then play host to the Israelis for the second leg in May.
