Digging for a New Beginning

A group of students will shortly be benefitting from a period of work-based training, thanks to the College's partnership with Scottish Coal.

Over the months of June and July, 15 students on the NQ Open Cast Mining Transport and Equipment Maintenance course will gain essential hands-on work experience at Scottish Coal's Plant Maintenance and Repair facilities throughout Ayrshire and Lanarkshire.

Ross Kerr, Motor Vehicle Curriculum Manager at Kilmarnock College, said "We have developed a very valuable partnership with Scottish Coal, which has helped to provide training and employment opportunities for young people with a genuine interest in open cast mining and the energy industry.

"We have been working with Scottish Coal for the past three years to provide opportunities for work placements. The programme has been a great success and last year alone, Scottish Coal recruited five of our students as Apprentice Plant Fitters on completion of their course".

The NQ Open Cast Mining Transport and Equipment Maintenance course is supported by Scottish Coal and ATH Resources and covers areas such as engine and drive line technologies, vehicle pneumatics and hydraulics, steering, braking, electronic systems and welding.
