Three sports students have returned from Easter break victorious, after scooping prestigious medals in Badminton, Netball and Karate.
Steven Byers (19), from Kilmarnock, became the first Scottish student to ever win a medal at the British College Badminton Championships. Steven, who is currently studying HNC Sports Coaching at Kilmarnock College, was selected to represent Scotland at the three day championships and picked up the bronze medal in the men’s singles category.
Steven’s classmate, Stephanie McGarrity (18), also picked up a Bronze medal over the holidays. Stephanie, from Ayr, successfully captained the Scottish under 19s Netball Team at the European Championships. After a tough competition, Stephanie and the rest of her team beat the Northern Irish team 47-43 and secured third place for Scotland in the competition.
Colin Cuthbert (25), a HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise student, competed at the European Karate Championships in Portugal in April. Colin, from Irvine, was crowned the Scottish Karate Champion in March 2010 and made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Europe-wide competition.
Heather Dunk, Principal of Kilmarnock College, said: “We are extremely proud of these students’ sporting successes. To have three of our students competing at a national level is a great achievement for Kilmarnock College, and a sign of the high calibre and talent of our sport and fitness students. Our warmest congratulations go to Steven, Stephanie and Colin.
