Three is the Magic Number

Three students have qualified to represent Kilmarnock College in the 2010 SkillWeld Scotland Apprentice Competition, set to take place at Forth Valley College this week.

NQ Fabrication and Welding students Andrew McHarg (20) from Cumnock, Miki Lock (18) from Newton Stewart, and Robbie Morton (19) from Doonfoot, qualified to represent the College in the first round of the SkillWeld competition after successfully constructing three weld test pieces in under three hours.

Finishing in first place was Andrew, who works for Adelphi Engineering. Stenna Lines employee Miki came in second place and finishing third was H.I.E Steel Fabrications employee, Robbie. All three students attend the College on a day release basis and are in the second year of their Modern Apprenticeships.

Alan Middleton, Welding and Fabrication Lecturer at Kilmarnock College, said: “We were very impressed with the performances of Andrew, Miki and Robbie. They demonstrated excellent skill and technique and performed very well under pressure. SkillWeld is the UK’s most prestigious national welder competition and we are confident that our apprentices will do brilliantly at the upcoming national round of the competition.”

If the students are successful in this week’s competition, they will progress on to the Scottish SkillWeld finals at Cumbernauld College later in the year.
