Nursing Careers at Kilmarnock College

For individuals considering a career in the nursing sector but aren't sure about the first step to take, Kilmarnock College may be just the ticket.

Over the years, Kilmarnock College has helped a number of students launch their careers in the healthcare sector. Courses such as the HNC Health Care course provide students with a basic introduction to the nursing world, covering areas including behavioural science, positive healthcare and principles of healthcare practice.

After successful completion of the HNC, many students choose to progress on to university and the College has secured excellent articulation routes with a host of Scottish universities including Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Strathclyde. One university that many students chose to progress to is the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and last year over 30 students from Kilmarnock College progressed on to the BSc Adult Nursing course at UWS.

Among them was Graeme Jackson (22), from Mauchline, East Ayrshire. Graeme first came to Kilmarnock College in August 2007 to study the one year Access to Nursing course and then in 2008 enrolled on the HNC Health Care course. Graeme said: "Kilmarnock College was just the step I needed before enrolling at university. It gave me the basic training I required and prepared me for my degree course. I loved my time at college and I am having a great time at university. I would encourage anyone to pursue a career in nursing, it is so rewarding."

Another student who progressed to UWS after completing a nursing course at Kilmarnock College was Eunsuk Blackwood (40), who is originally from South Korea but now living in Troon. Eunsuk explained: "I came to Scotland 13 years ago and for the last few years I was working as a manager at Superdrug in Troon. I loved my customers and enjoyed the work, but I always felt slightly unfulfilled. I began looking at college courses and nursing had always been something that interested me. So, in September 2007, I enrolled at Kilmarnock College.

"I was a little worried about how well I would do, as English is my second language, but the support from my lecturers was excellent. I am now halfway through the first year of my Adult Nursing degree at UWS. It is challenging but also great fun!"

Kilmarnock College offers health care programmes from Access to HND level, and many are available on a full-time or part-time basis.
