A team of enterprising students from Kilmarnock College has raised £1,700 for local charities after a year-long programme of fundraising events.
The students, who studied Access to Administration and IT in 2009-10, launched their fundraising campaign at the beginning of the last academic year as part of their course which requires students to undertake a unit in Enterprise Activity. They were tasked to work in teams organising various events to raise money for worthy charities. This year's student group organised a number of events as part of four teams and each group chose a charity to raise money for.
Sharon Gibson (33), one of the students who orchestrated the events, said: "We were delighted to raise such a great sum of money for our chosen charities. It is so tough for charities to fundraise in the current climate and we hope that this money will ease the strain and be put to good use."
Julie Maxwell, curriculum manager for Computing, Administration and IT, said: "The students raised a total of £1,758 for the students' chosen charities, Ayrshire Hospice, Yorkhill Children's Hospital, SSPCA and Ayrshire Cancer Support. The teams held events including: a quiz night with karaoke in the Stewarton Arms Hotel, leg waxing and raffles. They should be really proud of themselves for raising such a large sum of money for worthy causes. It was their drive and enthusiasm that helped them achieve their goal."
