Studious staff at Kilmarnock College were presented with awards at a ‘Celebration of Success' event at the College.
Staff from various departments were recognised for their achievements at the awards ceremony hosted by Kilmarnock College, following completion of various professional development courses - including Professional Development Awards (PDA): Introduction to Teaching in Further Education, and courses from HNC in Social Care to HND level in Automotive Engineering certificates.
Jane Devlin, from the College's Hairdressing Department, received two awards: an Assessor Award and a PDA: Introduction to Teaching in Further Education. Jane said: "I have found great benefit from my PDA and I use the learning style questionnaire with new groups. I now adapt my lesson to suit the needs of all students and use feedback to reflect on what went well and what I can do to improve. Classroom observations provided with me with supportive feedback, highlighting structure of lessons, the use of ICT and timescales used."
Graham Richmond, Construction Services lecturer, also received a PDA: Introduction to Teaching in Further Education. Graham said: "Completing the PDA has focused my mind on the various needs and diverse nature of the students. It has helped me to appreciate that there are many different types of students and learning styles. It has also enforced the importance of reflection in learning, not only for students but for lecturers.
"It was good to receive recognition for my achievement from Dr Wai-yin Hatton, Chair of the College's Organisational Development Committee and member of the Kilmarnock College Board of Management, as the last time I saw her she was presenting my son Craig with certificates at a prize giving event at Grange Academy in June 2010. When I told my son I had received a certificate from Wai-yin Hatton he enjoyed telling me that it was good that I was following in his footsteps and I was a credit to the family! I hope to meet Wai-yin Hatton next year to receive recognition for obtaining my Teaching Qualification (TQFE)."
Charlie Coyle, Training and Development Adviser for the College, said: "It really is a fantastic achievement to have so many members of staff recognised for their additional work in continually improving themselves professionally to ensure that they are the best they can be. Kilmarnock College is keen to encourage all of its staff as well as students to make the most of the learning facilities available at the College. We are extremely proud that 39 members of staff have achieved an award this year."
Wai-yin Hatton, chair of the College's OD Committee, said: "The board recognises the commitment and significant pressures of pursuing these qualifications over and above their day-job. These members of staff really are role models for the students at Kilmarnock College."
