Kilmanock Student on Track for Success

An ambitious Kilmarnock College student has been employed by this year's regional winners of the 2010 Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust (PSYBT) Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards after impressing them with her mechanical skills.

Lauren Harkins (17) from Stevenston is currently studying towards an SVQ Level 3/Modern Apprenticeship with Irvine-based Bank Street Auto Clinic.

Bank Street Auto Clinic owners Hayley Linton and Christopher Craig won a £1,000 cash prize which was presented by representatives from North Ayrshire Council at the awards ceremony after taking over the local tyre and exhaust centre in May 2009.

Experienced car mechanic Chris and accounting graduate Hayley have tripled their revenues after just one year of trading and now employ three mechanics including Lauren. They now plan to expand their business with an MOT station which will widen their customer offering as well as potentially creating more jobs.

Lauren said: "I knew that this was the job for me when I did work experience at a mechanics when I was at school, I worked with Chris then and when he said he was looking for a mechanic for Bank Street Auto Clinic, I jumped at the chance. Learning on the job as well as being in the classroom for theory one day a week is definitely helping me learn really quickly."
