Greg Dunlop, 16, of Kilwinning and Colin Cuthbert, 25, from Irvine, have been approved scholarships from the prestigious ‘Winning Students' scholarship programme after a series of impressive martial arts wins.
The pair, studying NC Fitness and HNC Fitness, Health and Exercise respectively at Kilmarnock College, were nominated for the programme after a series of competitive wins in taekwondo and karate. Sandy King, Kilmarnock College Sport and Fitness Curriculum Manager put them forward for the Scottish Funding Council backed initiative which aims to put Scotland's sporting talent on the world stage.
Sandy King said: "Both Greg and Colin have done exceptionally well to get to where they are today and they deserve the very best support to take them to the next stage.
"We're extremely proud to have them as students at the College and I think having athletes as talented as them choosing to study at Kilmarnock College is testament to the quality of courses on offer here.
"Greg is current World Taekwondo Champion and has a number of prestigious titles under his belt despite being only sixteen years old. He's shown exceptional promise taking home titles including Scottish, English and Welsh champion consecutively for the last three years as well as winning European and World Championship titles in 2007 and British Champion in 2008."
Earlier this month Greg successfully retained his World Championship title marking a three year undefeated record and making him World Champion for the second time. He currently fights at black belt heavyweight junior under 16 level.
Sandy added: "Similarly Colin is the current Scottish Karate Champion. He has represented Scotland in three European Championships and even competed at World Championship level. He did well in the 2010 European Championship too, reaching the semi-finals, before being forced to withdraw due to injury. He's ranked 4th in Europe's Heavyweight Division."
