Kilmarnock Students Pick Up Awards at National Hair and Beauty Competition

Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy students have arrived home victorious from the UK wide Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) competition.

After their recent success at the Scottish Area Finals in Airdrie, nine students from Kilmarnock College travelled to Blackpool to compete in the UK finals. SVQ Level 2 Nails student Laura McPherson (22) from Kilwinning and SVQ Level 3 Hairdressing student Claire Lindsay (21) from Kilmarnock won third and fourth place at the national competition respectively.

Laura finished in third place in the Freehand Nail Art Category, and Claire finished in fourth place in the Skills Challenge category, with both girls receiving a cash prize, a certificate and a medal.

Laura, who also took first place at the Scottish Area finals, said: "I was delighted to be placed and happy to receive a bronze medal. I was in shock when they called out my name as the standard of work was so high I didn't think I would be placed. I was very nervous before the competition started but once it began I felt more comfortable and just got on with the work."

Nancy Dobbie, Hairdressing Curriculum Manager at Kilmarnock College, said: "The standard of work in this competition was extremely high and the students did tremendously well to make it to the national finals. We are extremely proud of all of our students who took part and a special well done to those who were placed. Overall it is a great achievement for the college to be one of only six Scottish colleges which placed at the event."
