Glynis Williamson from Galston and Allison Turnbull from Darvel, who were both mature students on the HNC Administration with Medical Options course, were invited to discuss their experiences of Further Education and employment with students who are currently taking the same course. Glynis and Allison explained how the course helped both of them find employment in the health sector; Glynis is now employed as a Medical Receptionist within a general practice while Allison is now an optician's receptionist.
Administration Lecturer Norma Cooper said: "We were really pleased that Glynis and Allison were able to give up their time to come and speak to the current HNC Administration students. The object of the day was to give current students an insight into how to best approach the course and also to make them aware of what career options are available once they have completed the course.
"Glynis and Allison explained how the theory learned in the course applies to their day-to-day tasks and encouraged the students to make the most out of their upcoming work placements. They were very enthusiastic and have definitely spurred the students on."
The HNC Administration with Medical Options is considered essential for administrative posts in primary and secondary health care and has a high success rate: every student who completed the course at Kilmarnock College last year went into employment in medical administration or continued their studies to HND level. As well as learning theory, students have the opportunity to arrange their own work experience placement and become familiar with GPass, the software used in most general practices.
The College will be introducing several new courses in August 2009 including HND Administration, the PDA in Medical Terminology and the PDA in Information Technology programmes.
